Environmental Advocates Highlight Flood Risks and Ecological Damage
In a proactive effort to address environmental concerns and mitigate the risks of flooding in the region, the Green Planet Society recently met with Punjab's Water Resources Minister, Shri Chetan Singh Jouramajra. During the meeting, the society presented a memorandum requesting the cleaning of Sukhna Choe Drain near Gazipur in Zirakpur.
The stretch of Sukhna Choe Drain between Bishangarh, Gazipur, and Nagla has become heavily obstructed with plastic, weeds, and debris, hindering the natural flow of water. President Sumit Bhardwaz emphasized to the minister that these obstructions not only disrupt the ecosystem but also exacerbate flooding during the rainy season.
Bhardwaz pointed out that the floods last year had a devastating impact on the Gazipur forest area, resulting in the loss of numerous trees. The Green Planet Society stressed the urgency of addressing these issues to protect both the environment and local communities from further harm.
In response, Minister Jouramajra assured the society of the government's commitment to environmental preservation and pledged to take swift action to clean the Sukhna Choe Drain. He acknowledged the importance of maintaining natural waterways for ecological balance and community safety.
The Green Planet Society expressed gratitude for the minister's attention to their concerns and pledged continued collaboration to ensure the health and sustainability of Punjab's water resources.
The proposed cleaning of the Sukhna Choe Drain marks a significant step towards environmental conservation and disaster risk reduction in the region, highlighting the importance of proactive measures to safeguard our natural habitats and communities.
