Municipal Council, Zirakpur Proposes Green Initiative for Sukhna-Chow Vacant Land

The Municipal Council of Zirakpur is taking a significant step towards environmental conservation by proposing a plantation project on its own land. The proposed site, Khasra No. 77 min. Bighe 6 Bisway, situated on the left side of the Causeway at Sukhna-Chow, has been identified as an ideal location for this green initiative.

The vacant land, owned by the Municipal Council, Zirakpur, is positioned at a strategic height above the bank of the Sukhna River. However, it is essential to note that the area falls under the prohibition outlined in Notification Ghar 4/7/2011-1(W) (1) /543 BHI, dated 22.02.2011, issued by the Department of Irrigation, Punjab. Section 55 part VII of the "Northern India Canal and Drainage Act" restricts any form of construction to prevent obstruction to the natural flow of Sukhna-Chow.

To address this challenge, the Green Planet Society has submitted an application to the Municipal Council, Zirakpur, expressing its interest in undertaking plantation activities on this specific piece of land. As per the proposal, only one acre of the mentioned Khasra number is temporarily allocated for the society's plantation purposes. Importantly, the society is committed to adhering strictly to the stipulation that no other activities, aside from plantation, will be conducted on the allotted land.

The rationale behind this initiative is to contribute to environmental preservation by preventing any potential obstruction to the natural flow of Sukhna-Chow. Additionally, the proposed plantation aims to combat erosion along the Sukhna River, fostering a healthier ecosystem. Beyond environmental benefits, this initiative is expected to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city, creating a greener and more attractive urban environment.

The resolution was passed by the House of the Municipal Council, Zirakpur. The initiative underscores the Council's commitment to sustainable development and environmental responsibility.
